IT Security Tip: Lie, lie, lie!
IT Security Tip: Lie, lie, lie!
Social engineering is big business. But what is it? The definition of Social Engineering is, figuring out who you are, what you are about, how you operate, what your preferences are, and then using that information against you to make money off it.
We've all seen them, maybe you’ve even done them yourself, viral social media quizzes. Innocent though they may seem, they often ask for more information than necessary to complete the game. Maiden name? Check. Favorite pet? Check. High school? Check. Town you grew up in? Check. Favorite or first car? Check.
Throwback Thursday is a social engineer’s dream! They love this stuff. Most people will freely divulge lots and lots of personal information when feeling sentimental.
Be careful with social media quizzes; only answer questions that you are comfortable with. And if an answer relates to a password that you use or answers one of your security questions DON'T answer it. This is where we give you permission to lie.
Our advice? Don't fill them out at all. I mean, do you really need to know who your 80's movie boyfriend is?
