Sullivan County Historian - John Conway "Doctors Say, "Go to the Mountains""
The Upper Delaware Welcome Center opened its doors in late 2020 at The Narrowsburg Union with the mission to make it easier for the region’s residents and visitors to more easily access information about the region’s attractions, activities and offerings. We realized that visitors come to the Upper Delaware region and in visiting the region, must deal with the separate visitors’ bureaus of the five counties (3 in NYS and 2 in PA) that touch the Upper Delaware. We want to do our bit to help folks get out there and start enjoying the region sooner! At the Upper Delaware Welcome Center, we do the work of gathering and synthesizing the information to make it more accessible for you! Please stop by when you are in the neighborhood and take advantage of the materials available! In addition to being a source for information about activities, attractions and offerings, The Upper Delaware Welcome Center will offer programs and presentations that aspire to connect residents, visitors and new residents alike to the wonderful history, outdoors, creativity and energy in the region. Doctors Say, "Go to the Mountains!": How the Region's Reputation as a Healing Environment Built the Economy in Sullivan County - Sullivan County was formed from Ulster County in 1809, but its history as one of North America’s most healing environments dates back considerably before that. From the earliest visits of the Lenape, who constructed their sweat lodges among the willow trees on the banks of the Delaware to the tuberculosis sufferers who searched for a cure in the cool mountain climate, hundreds of thousands of people have visited this area over the years because of the clean air and pure water to be found here. This ongoing phenomenon has taken on a new significance in the wake of the COVID pandemic, and Sullivan County Historian John Conway delves into its past, present, and future in this captivating program. Join us Saturday, May 22nd from 3:00pm - 4:30pm in person (50 person max) or via zoom for viewing.
