Liberty Public Library presents “Loomis: The Man, the Sanitarium, & the Search for the Cure”
On Thursday June 20th at 6:30 PM the Liberty Public Library will present ‘Loomis: The Man, the Sanitarium, & the Search for the Cure’ presented by Sullivan County Historian John Conway.
Many people have no idea that one of the largest breakthroughs in the treatment of tuberculosis was achieved right here in Sullivan County, just a few miles from the town of Liberty. The brainchild of Dr. Alfred L. Loomis, the Loomis Sanitarium for Consumptives was opened in 1896 and treated countless patients, many from New York City. The sanitarium and its grounds grew to almost 200 acres, transforming the area, before it closed in 1942.
Sullivan County historian John Conway will bring Dr. Loomis and the sanitarium back to life with stories and photos. This will be a fascinating evening that anyone interested in local history won’t want to miss!
Registration is encouraged. This free presentation will be held at the Liberty Public Library at 189 North Main Street, Liberty, NY 12754. For more information and registration, please call the library at (845)292-6070 or see the events calendar at libertypubliclibrary.org
