About: Gender Equality New York (GENY), New York’s statewide transgender, non-binary, and intersex advocacy organization, is proud to continue its rollout of an education campaign to increase the general public’s understanding of the gender-expansive community. The Sullivan Transgender Forum Looks to Increase Public Awareness The overarching goal of the campaign is to increase understanding and respect for transgender, non-binary, and intersex New Yorkers and to decrease incidents of discrimination and violence. GENY seeks to influence the general public’s social attitudes, gain allies, and establish the community’s presence across New York State. As part of this campaign, GENY is holding Public Forums throughout New York State. The forums, entitled “Everything You Wanted To Know About Transgender, Non-Binary, and Intersex People…But Were Afraid To Ask!” includes a “Trans 101” presentation and an interactive panel made up of local community members. The panelists tell their personal stories and put a face on the “trans issue”. Audience members are encouraged to ask questions to gain a better understanding of those who are gender- expansive. Social networking before and after the event allows audience members to meet local transgender, non-binary and intersex people. For many of them, this is the first such encounter. More: The Sullivan County Human Rights Commission fosters mutual respect, understanding and equity of treatment for all persons in Sullivan County per NYS Human Rights Law. Gender Equality New York, Inc. is devoted to advancing transgender, gender non-binary, and intersex issues through education and connectivity. GENY’s goals are (1) to increase the general public's awareness and understanding of the transgender, gender non-binary, and intersex community, (2) educate and help public and private organizations to become transgender inclusive, and (3) educate public officials to better understand the constituents who make up the transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex community and their needs.
