Documentary "Deep Water: Building the Catskill Water System" Viewing followed by Greg Triggs Interviewing Mermer Blakeslee, Author of "When You Live by a River"

Join us for a viewing of “Deep Water: Building the Catskill Water System” a 45 minute documentary followed by an interview with Mermer Blakeslee, author of “When You Live by a River” When You Live by a River is a twisted love story set in 1931 in a place that is dying, the valley of a small Catskill Mountain town about to be flooded for a New York City reservoir. Large, marginalized souls, these are characters bound to the land, swinging between the severe grip of an Old Testament God and the sensual sway of a river. Mermer Blakeslee is the author of three novels. In Dark Water, called by Connie May Fowler “a novel of uncommon grace and soaring beauty,” was selected by Barnes and Noble for its Discover Great New Writers series. “Blakeslee’s world,” the San Francisco Chronicle stated, “is lyrical and mythic, filled with magic, visions and dreams.” Leenie, an excerpt from When You Live by a River won the Narrative Prize. Blakeslee was awarded three fiction fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Her roots are in poetry and two of her poems were finalists in Narrative's First and Second Annual Poetry Contests. Blakeslee is also a professional skier and has worked intensively with fearful students. Her non-fiction book, In the Yikes! Zone has been recently reissued as A Conversation with Fear.
