Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan

Students are encouraged to apply for available scholarships by April 15 deadline

MONTGOMERY, NY (January 6, 2022) – A total of nearly 150 scholarships worth nearly $446 thousand will be awarded this spring to students in Orange and Sullivan counties. High school seniors and adults returning to college are encouraged to apply now for these scholarships which are available through the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan (CFOS).

Students can apply online for scholarships at cfosny.org until April 15. After filling out a single application, they will be notified of which specific scholarships they are eligible for and whether those scholarships have additional application requirements. This streamlined process makes it easier for students to find the best fit scholarship opportunities for their unique circumstances and abilities.

“Thanks to the generosity of our incredible donors, the Foundation is able to offer a wide range of scholarships annually which make a tremendous difference for local students and their families,” said Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan President and CEO Elizabeth Rowley. “A college education gets more costly each year, and we’re proud to support deserving young people and other students realize their dreams of higher education or career training.”

A recent addition to the CFOS family of funds is the Billy Moran Athletic Scholarship Fund. The scholarship honors the memory of Billy Moran who was killed in 1981 by a hit and run driver at the age of 20 while attending spring training with his Union College baseball team.

The scholarship established by family and friends is awarded annually to a Sullivan West graduating senior who maintains a 90 average, plays at least two sports, and exhibits citizenship and leadership as Billy did while attending Delaware Valley Central School.

The Billy Moran Athletic Scholarship Fund distributes a scholarship annually to a Sullivan West graduating senior who maintains a 90 average, plays at least two sports, and exhibits citizenship and leadership.

“A standout three-sport athlete, Billy excelled both academically and athletically and was considered an outstanding member of our community,” said his sister, Terri Kuhn. “His exploits on the gridiron, court and diamond are now captured only in our mind’s eye. Billy’s memory lives on because of people’s generous contribution of time and money to the scholarship fund.”
