Hurleyville, NY, 07.14.23 - All That Glitters Is Old (ATGIO) is not just a store; it's a manifestation of a lifelong desire for fashion and music. Founder Samara Ritzler brings a personal story that weaves together cherished memories and a deep connection to the world of style and sound.
From an early age, Samara Ritzler developed an insatiable love for classic rock music. It all began with the powerful tunes of Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Moody Blues, which filled the air during car rides with Samara’s mother. At only three years old, the seeds of musical appreciation were planted, and they would grow and flourish over the years.
Around the age of 12, fashion became an integral part of Samara’s life. Exploring her mother's closet, which was a treasure trove of vintage gems from the '70s and '80s, including iconic names like Betsey Johnson, Norma Kamali, and a meticulously upcycled Sergio Valente denim jacket adorned with a hand-drawn Picasso painting on the back. That same jacket, a symbol of nostalgia and creativity, and inspiration for her current rock jackets, is still cherished and worn to this day.
Fueling the fire of passion, Samara pursued a higher education at The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), graduating with a BA in Advertising and Marketing. During her time at FIT, Samara gained invaluable experience interning with celebrity stylists on movie sets and editorial shoots, refining her eye for fashion and honing her creative skills.
After graduation, Samara embarked on an exciting journey, working for prominent niche men's fashion magazines such as Man of the World, At Large, and The Rake Magazine. Immersed in the world of high-end menswear, she had the opportunity to witness the power of fashion storytelling and its ability to shape personal style.
The world took an unexpected turn when Covid-19 gripped the globe, prompting Samara to reevaluate her path in life. Drawing upon fond memories of summers spent in the Catskills—a place close to her heart and a destination loved by her mother—a decision was made to relocate to the picturesque town of Bethel. A profound sense of connection to the region inspired her desire to establish roots in the community.
Dreams of owning a thrift and record shop had always danced in Samara’s imagination. Serendipitously, the opportunity presented itself through the Retail Store Entrepreneurial Program initiated by Hurleyville. Without hesitation, she eagerly applied, driven by a deep desire to create a space that celebrates individuality, sustainability, and the enduring allure of vintage fashion.
Months of unwavering dedication and hard work culminated in being selected as the winner among a pool of highly creative business entrepreneurs. Samara expresses heartfelt gratitude to Jeffrey T. Stevenson, the visionary behind The Main Street MEWS and the creator of the program, for making this dream come true.
